Books and Essays

Below is a list of books I have read completely and in some cases only specific chapters. Some were part of a reading group with Jordan Wolfson, some from other teachers and others I found myself.

The first two below are two books which had a major impact on my art practice and if you are a painter I encourage you pick them up if you have not already read them.

  • All About Process, by Kim Grant

  • Changing Images of Pictorial Space, by William Dunning

Other books in no particular order

Mysteries of the Rectangle, by Siri Hurstvedt

Dewey for Artists, by Mary Jane Jacob

To Whom the Shoe Fits, Letters to a Young Painter, by Pat Passlof

Notes to a Painter, by Matisse

Life of Forms in Art, by Henri Focillon

On Judging Works of Art, Conrad Fielder

Art to Come, by Terry Smith

What Painting Is, by James Elkkins
